28 March to 7 April 1985, the World Championships was held in Sweden, for the first time in a different location than Stockholm.
Gothenburg and Scandinavium stood for the hostess and these World Championships ended with a gold medal for Sweden in Men’s doubles and silver medal in Men’s Teams for Sweden.
World Championships 1985 was a major audience success and we saw China continuing its victory struggle.
They won the Swaythling Cup for the third consecutive time after beating Sweden in the final. Home soil din not help, China was clearly the stronger team.
The Marcel Corbillon Cup was also won by China for the sixth consecutive time.
In Men’s Singles, Jiang Jialiang was absolutely sovereign. Equally sure winner in Women’s Singles was Cao Yanhua. The Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles trophies also went to China. Six titles out of seven possible were an impressive result. However, one title was not brought home. It stayed in Sweden. Mikael Appelgren and Ulf Carlsson won the Men’s Doubles, the Iran Cup, in facing a jubilant home crowd and the World Championships 1985 was also a sporting success.
