April 4th, 1989 was not any old Tuesday. For approximately three hours, between 18:05 and 21:11, three table tennis boys wrote a new chapter in Swedish sports history. 28 year old Mikael Appelgren, 23 year-old Jan-Ove Waldner and 22 year-old Jörgen Persson didn’t just win their matches, they tore down a wall that many thought would stand throughout the 20th century. The result, 5-0, in mighty Westfalenhalle in Dortmund is already one of table tennis most classic matches and also the beginning of a Swedish era of three consecutive team gold medals.
